Closed Cell vs. Open Cell
Closed-cell and open-cell spray foam are two distinct types of insulation, each with unique characteristics suited for different applications.
Closed-cell spray foam is denser, with a compact cellular structure that makes it rigid and strong. It has a higher R-Value per inch, providing thermal resistance. It’s closed structure also makes it highly resistant to moisture, acting as a vapour barrier and offering added structural reinforcement to walls and roofs. This makes it ideal for exterior applications, basements, and areas prone to moisture.
Open-cell spray foam is lighter, softer, and more flexible due to its less dense, porous cellular structure. It has a lower R-Value and better soundproofing qualities. Open-cell foam is more cost-effective and expands significantly, making it perfect for interior walls and ceilings.
